On Good Friday the Maroon & Gold played host to Upper Eden who made the long trip down from Cumbria and arrived in good spirits. After the settling opening exchanges it was Upper Eden who scored first with a converted try under the posts – which was just reward for their aggressive opening play. This spurred Clitheroe on and after some great interlinking play from backs and forwards it was Dickinson who slid over in the corner for the try. The conversion was missed but Clitheroe was keen to chase into a lead. When half time called the scores remained 5 – 7 to the visitors.
In the second half Clitheroe had much of the possession but lacked the clinical finish in attack that has been their trade mark all season. As Upper Eden clawed their way back up the pitch, Clitheroe snaffled the ball and turned defence into attack. As the team screamed up the pitch the Upper Eden defence scrambled back and in their eagerness to snuff out the attack gave away a kickable penalty – Railton coolly stepped up and dissected the posts to put the Maroon & Gold into a narrow lead at 8 – 7.
Despite the best efforts of both teams, that is where score stayed until the final whistle. Clitheroe were in one aspect lucky to claim the narrow victory, but in another the possession they had should have resulted in a more comfortable victory.
