The 1sts travelled to play Wigan 3's with some trepidation . In days of old that would mean a tough encounter with Wigan Vets and ex Rugby league players which usually resulted in a win for the home side and some very sore bodies from the visitors.
Things have changed. In a show of what can only be described as lack of club loyalty; almost the entire playing section from that team have moved to another club to play at a lower level, and presumably continue to terrorise other teams.
The net result is that Wigan 3's are petering on the edge of dropping out of the league through lack of numbers and using up their 'concedes'.
However with some excellent communication between the clubs during the week Clitheroe committed to travel but found only half a team waiting to play them.
We don't know the ins & outs of the Wigan situation but it seems a crying shame that players have deserted them. The set up is great at Douglas Valley - the pitches are superb and the Wigan players and staff are good people.
So after a consultation with the opposition Captain and referee it was agreed that Clitheroe would lend some players so everyone got a game of rugby that afternoon. Which is surely the object.
It started off 13 v 12 and with several Clitheroe players keen, almost too keen, to volunteer for Wigan!
As I don't know who scored exactly, only that Will Dickenson scored for both teams.
The game was open and played in tremendous spirit and well refereed.
So well done to all who played and thanks for Wigan's excellent after match hospitality. We hope they can keep going and strengthen for the return visit to Littlemoor in the new year
