The new season...a cup match at home...perfect weather...it's what we've been waiting for all summer.
New look Clitheroe under the new head coach Tom Lavelle got off to a solid start for the season with a 7 try to 3 win in this Lancashire Bowl rubber.
Blazing golden sunshine was the order of the day. Indeed that was not the only yellow on show, both sides wearing similar colours and the referee choosing to wear a matching yellow shirt!
It didn't seem to bother the players but the bumper crowd were a tiny bit perplexed. It certainly didn't affect the home side who looked comfortable in the opening exchanges. Both sides testing out each other early on. But it was the pocket rockets the Burns brothers who opened Clitheroe's account.
Prop forward Josh burrowing over and elder bro Nathon on target with the extras. A good start we thought.
Bury thought otherwise and came back with a try of their own followed by two penalties to retake the lead.
This was the kick up the backside the team needed. In quick succession it was a clean sweep for the front row union; new boy prop Joe Shorrock went over for his debut try and hooker Ed Sinclair was next in the queue. A double conversion and the town team was on a roll.
Not content with one try Shorrock plunged over for another but the extras went begging this time. With the half drawing to a close Bury grabbed one back to keep them in the game.
26-16 at Half time.
Plenty of work ons for training and the need to cut out the penalty count was something of note.
The opening game in the league campaign this weekend, Salford based De la Salle RFC are the visitors to Silcock Park. 3pm
