Opening Day Victory at Preston

William Jones Esq reports from PGH.....

Well new season, new faces, new rules and hopefully the new normal.

The motley crew assembled at Lightfoot Lane ready to continue the stunning start to the season with two (walkover) wins under their belts it was clear that confidence was high in the Cavaliers camp.

The shenanigans started early this match with hoppers only having 13 meaning the maroons could only start with 14 which was exactly the number of players available at kick off. Then after 80 minutes of fairly breathtaking rugby we'd walloped them. It was a very encouraging performance given the number of personnel playing in new positions especially in the pack. In a break from tradition we've decided to do player ratings rather than a blow by blow account.

1. Howie the Taff, a solid debut for the Swansea strong man, showed up well in the tight and a nuisance in the lose only forward to look good in a Clitheroe shirt 8.
2.Will Jones:(kindly sponsored by Fellside Farming) old, fat, talked and sweated a lot 6.5 bonus point for not having a heart attack 7.5
3. Adam Wood: superb double debut played well for the maroons in the tight and loose, so happy he also made his hoppers debut where he showed he could run hard too. Then got confused when he was back in the maroon and gold and got carded 6 (would've been 8 but for the yellow) and hoppers gave him a 9 for hard running.
4. Sam Barr,(kindly sponsored by Cherry Tree Bakery) did everything but score, grew into the game solid defence and a couple of good runs and excellent support play then ruined it by wearing spray on jeans after the game -1.5 (10 point deduction for the jeans)
5. Forrest, now he's a second row he needs a new nickname played very well on his debut caught the ball (but not at the line-out) and ran hard very promising 8.
6. Mitch Jones, worked hard at blindside and like Sam 'spray on' Barr grew into the game as it progressed a couple of nice passes showed that he has the potential to grow into a link man between his new mates in the pack and the backs he's left behind.
7. Austin, didn't start a fight, didn't get carded, caught the ball and joined the big boys, text book line out win at the death to set up Bleasy's final try, still supports Burnley minus 47 (otherwise would have been a 7. 5).
8. Did not play due to Hoppers not having enough players.
9. Super Sammy Cheeseman. Toiled hard against a shrewd Preston backrow, some nice touches and continues to develop (also got belted in the head) 7.5.
10. Matt Bleasdale captain fantastic got the back line firing and scored a few lovely solo tries 8
11. Bruno tres bien beaucoup d'effort 7
12. Jack Stanley, (kindly sponsored by Timeless Fragrance) awarded man of the match for his relentless pressurising of the Hoppers back line both with and without the ball he scored a couple of tries too 8.5
13. Sam White superb as always even passed the ball, was unlucky to be blown over by a freak gust of wind denying him what would have been a deserved 4th try. 8 lost half a point for awful post match attire shameful.
14. Jack Nadin, a natural athlete. Spider contributed one of the moments of the game with a fantastic juggle then run from our 10 m line where he beat the entire Preston side to score (and tweaked his hamstring in the process). 7.5
15. Oscar Duck, hard as nails, forged not made, some of his running lines were outstanding, weighed in with a couple of tries, very unlucky not to pick up the man of the match award some might say it was quackers [OMG - Ed] not to give it to him. 8.5
16. Tom Hardman, answered the call at the last and arrived in time to put in a solid shift in the set piece and became another customer for Fellside Farming purveyors of fine meats great effort 7.5
17. Pund the man the myth the legend. solid and looked relieved when the mighty Taff Howie turned up. Showed up in the tight and looked keen in the loose (for both sides!) 7.5
18. Captain Kirk,(kindly sponsored by Fellside Farming) a stunning effort to get to the game and a welcome 20 minute cameo at the end of the game, lots of enthusiasm but by the time he joined the fray the ref was trying to level things up so found himself pinged 412 times but still managed some strong fringe hits and plenty of running slowly. 7.5.
