Coach left fuming

Clitheroe rugby team made the short witches broom ride over Pendle Hill to Holt House, home of local rivals, Colne & Nelson RFC for this North Lancs Div 2 derby match last Saturday.

The maroons were shorn of a few regulars on the injury list, back row men Struan Robertson, Darren Eagle and Alex Bolton; plus in the backs, the Skipper Nathan Peel, was away on business & Jordan Wilde was still holidaying.
In came Ginger Rick Edmondson in the pack, along with a reshuffle in the back line, seeing James Bickie Dickinson move to centre, James Troffy Waterworth return on the wing, and on the bench came Joe Newton and Kieran Keough into the 1st XV squad for the first time this season.

All was set fair; a firmish pitch, a partisan crowd and a pumped up opposition team, set the scene that welcomed the visitors.
Led out by captain for the day Ross Chamberlain, the maroon and gold hoped jerseys faced the enemy into the wind in the first half.
What followed over the next 20 minutes just about set the template for the entire game.
Colne, well drilled as ever, made a few short drives into Clitheroe territory and then in textbook fashion unleashed their three-quarter line. Some straight powerful running from the bulky centres drew in the Clitheroe defence time and again. An easy overlap was exploited excellently and in no time the tries were raining in down the wing.
It was perhaps unfortunate that it was the precise place the Clitheroe coach had chosen to observe the match from.
As the Colne backs seemed to scoot pass his line of vision again and again, face turned through several colours of the rainbow; from red, then purple, then down to ashen grey. How exasperating for him as he watched on helpless, as the seemingly hapless defence failed to stem the tidal wave of blue shirts again and again.
Half time just couldn’t come soon enough for the visiting side, but by then they were already four tries down with just a couple of penalties from the boot of Martin Lafranceschina to show for it.
The interval was time for home truths and some reshuffling of resources; on came Adam Penny at hooker, Joe Newton at flanker and Kieron Keough at full back.
Along with some inspirational words from the senior players and Captain, the second half could only get better.
And to be fair to Clitheroe, there was a definite improvement. The scrums steadied with Chamberlain now at lock, and although the line outs were still problematic, Clitheroe began to compete with far more vigour and rigour in the loose and around the park.
Some surging runs from young tyro lock Sam Thornber, plus some excellent savaging from Rick Slinger set the tone. That was enthusiastically followed in the back line by Chris Waddington at inside centre.
Waddington is showing increased maturity in his position this season and single handled stopped many of the Colne attacks at source. It was a shame he ploughed such a lonely furrow at times and others failed to follow his lead.
At full back, Lafranceschina, was a rock and came into the line well and also asked questions of the Colne defence when he moved up to stand off.

But all in all a well below par performance and one to put down to experience, bitter as though that is to swallow.
Colne were tremendous value for their win and Clitheroe can make no excuses this week. Just not good enough on the day.
