Clitheroe lack the finishing touch in a frustrating game for Ollie Mc's side.

The Maroon & Gold travelled away to Tyldesley on Saturday after a good performance the week before full of confidence and looking to consolidate their league position. However, things did not go their way through much of the match and frustration set in resulting in a performance which will go down as one that got away!
The game started brightly enough for Clitheroe 1st XV with pressure resulting in a penalty in front of the post which was duly taken by Lafranceschina to give them an early advantage. Tyldesley then pressed into the Clitheroe half and scampered up the blind side for a score near the flag to tilt the advantage back their way 5 – 3. Clitheroe were quickly back in the Tyldesley half from the re-start and their pressure told as Tyldesley infringed and again Lafranceschina converted the penalty, 5 -6. As the nip and tuck first half continued Tyldesley lost a turnover ball in the middle of the park and as Clitheroe progressed into score territory the ball spilt loose and suddenly Tyldesley raced up the park and punished the mistake by scoring and converting to move the score on to 12 – 6.
From the re-start, Rigby hit the catcher and put Clitheroe on the front foot, with the ball snaffled by his back row partners, Watson fed the ball out, Lafranceschina crashed on in his usual style then popped the ball to the supporting lock Ed Thornber. Making more yards he duly passed to Peel who smashed over near the posts to make the conversion easy for Lafranceschina, the score moved on to 12 – 13 to give the Maroon & Gold the advantage again. As Clitheroe pushed on looking for a killer score to settle the team and put some distance between the two sides before the break, again they forced it too hard and from the resulting mistake the Tyldesley winger received the ball and sprinted in from 70 yards to give the home team the advantage again by 17 to 13.
At the half time team talk both Captain and Coach reiterated the game plan and the teams switched round with both feeling the match was well within their grasp. The second half progressed with Clitheroe pushing hard and Tyldesley playing for a home win – the Maroon & Gold lineout was not as effective as usual but the scrum was dominant and won some good turn over ball in handy positions on the park.
With neither team seemingly able to get the ball over the line or through the posts a tense finish to match was calling. Tyldesley virtually camped in the Clitheroe half for long periods, while the defence held good and no points were conceded it was a worry that Clitheroe could not get their hands on the ball for any length of time. Both sides had chances but eventually Tyldesley broke the deadlock with a blindside move from the scrum which saw them touch down near the flag and a good conversion saw them move to 24 – 13 and leaving Clitheroe needing two tries in less than 4 minutes – which effectively put the game beyond their reach.
Clitheroe did finish the match strongly and pressed the Tyldesley line for the remainder of the match, but to no avail. It was a frustrating afternoon for the Maroon & Gold and nothing seemed to go right – however when they did gel they looked sharp and dangerous. Next week the 1st XV entertain league leaders Pendle at Littlemoor with a 3 pm kick off.
