Clitheroe Junior Colts set about their task of putting right the wrongs from last week in fine style away at Burnley in the second of six preliminary round games.

Despite playing the majority of the game with one player less than the opposition, with a few players moving into their new college abodes and a couple dropping out through injury, Clitheroe set out of the blocks at 100 miles per hour, scoring 3 tries in the first 6 mins. George Hamlet was first on the score sheet in his first game of the season, slotting into the back line in some style. His centre partner Duck scored next, streaking away down the middle before converting his own try. Then another returnee to the team, Joseph Marsden scored a brilliant team try- Hooker Spink caught the ball cleanly from the kick off before the ball moved quickly left through forwards' and backs' hands before Marsden cooly tagged onto Duck to finish off a belting move. Burnley were clearly stunned at being 19 point down so quickly.

Second row Barraclough barged his big frame over the line later on in the first half to score his first try for the club and Clitheroe took a 24-0 lead into the half time team talk. Coaches busily reviewed the performance, which was a vast improvement on the previous game and things to work identified for the upcoming 35 minutes.

Burnley were first to score in the second half and were starting to look more dangerous, their 10 and 12 combining well to make good ground. Clitheroe realised where the dangers were coming from and started to neutralise them when on 9 minutes, Waller received the ball deep in his own half after a quick tap penalty and showed a clean pair of heels to dot down for another 5 points. He repeated the same less than 10 minutes later to score his second and his team's 6th try, Duck knocking over the conversions each time.

Fly half Wilkinson was the final Clitheroe try scorer after some good team approach work; forwards working well to secure the ball at the ruck and backs releasing the ball at the right time when the opportunities were presenting themselves. The last team to score was the home side, just after Wilkinson had been yellow-carded for an over-enthusiastic tackle on the Burnley full-back.

The final score was 45-12 to Clitheroe, who not only improved significantly after last week, but also realised they've still got more to offer against upcoming opposition. Each and every player played their part in no uncertain terms and it's difficult to single anyone out. Smith, returning after illness was worthy of a mention however; his tenacity and terrier-like defensive qualities certainly set the tone for the rest of the team to follow.

Next up for the town team is Wirral, a team who beat Burnley by a similar score only last week. They just believe they can step up once more and return the "fortress" bit to Fortress Littlemoor.
