What a game of two halves!
In the first half Clitheroe Cavaliers dominated proceedings though their rampant forwards. The front row of skipper Rawstron, Clemmey & Kyle took all their own and most of the opposition ball. The back row of Piercy and Thornber were marshalled gracefully by Holmes in his favoured number 8 shirt.
It was through the forwards that Clemmey took the ball into the opposition 22. The referee spotted an infringement at the tackle area and awarded a penalty directly in front of the posts. Although, Keiron Keough opted to kick the skipper had a dilemma on his hands as Keough had been appaling with boot the previous week which had ultimately cost them the game. Should he go for a tap penalty or trust that Keough was going to make amends? In the end his gut instinct was right and Keough slotted it with the grace of a bull. However, 10 minutes in and they were three points to the good.
The rest of the half was mainly Clitheroe with two tries coming through blindside flanker Thornber jnr. The first from within the opposition 22, the second from the Cavaliers own 22. A delightful intercept caught the home team off guard and the pacy youngster outran a number of would be tacklers to score under the posts. Blackpool managed to pull one back just before half time but Clitheroe were still in front.
The skipper at half time warned the team not to switch off but unfortunately they did not heed his warning and they allowed Blackpool to bully their way back into the game. Blackpool scored a number of tries through their pacy backs without response. Poor tackling being the culprit on this outing.
Some positives from a very disapointing result. Clemmey at hooker impressed as did McKenna at scrumhalf. 'Beefcake' Smith again made some direct yards moving forward with ball in hand and Holland once again put in a good half. Heptonstall and Thompson also did well on the wings, tackling well despite playing out of position.
The team look forward to their next game v Colne and Nelson on Saturday where they must all play for the whole 80 minutes and not allow themselves to switch off!
