The Clitheroe second team maintained their 100% home winning streak at
Littlemoor with a strong win over Bolton 4ths.
Having played against Bolton for many years the Captain Windy Rawstron
knew they would be a strong set of forwards and would try to play a
tight game. From the off this is exactly what the Bolton players did
and the Cavaliers didn't help themselves by falling straight into
their game plan. They got sucked into the hard grind and struggled to
compete with the bulky opposition. A penalty was given away in the
home teams 22 by the Captain for retaliating after some niggle in the
scrum. From this penalty the visitors scored their solitary try which
they converted. With a minute left on the clock in the first half Bill
Thatcher managed to squeeze over the line; half time score 5-7 to the
visitors.
At the half time pep talk the team were asked to change tactics and
not continue to play the tight game. They were asked to use the speed
of the young back row and spread the ball wide to the back line.
Veterans Alan Nuttal and Roger Holmes also entered the fray at this
point to settle down the forwards.
As a result of this change in tactics the Cavaliers never looked back.
Tries came thick and fast from Dave Fairhurst, scrum half Ben Rigby, a
brace from man of the match Sam Thornber and speedster Tom Redfearn[pictured]
who scored his first ever try. Thatcher was sure footed converting 5
of 6 attempts; notching up a fantastic second half performance for the
team.
The team is certainly beginning to gel and the captain hopes for
consistency of availability to ensure that they can build on this
early season success.
