Clitheroe Cavaliers travelled to Orrell in their first away game of
the season. With a number of players unavailable the Cavaliers went
with 15 men. On a sweltering day the lack of substitutes appeared to
daunt the team before kick off.
It was left to a number of fledgling players such as Mark Piercy, Matt
Bleasdale and Tom Redfearn to set the standard with some immense
tackling and general all round play. They set the tone which the
majority of the senior players couldn't match up to.
As to the game the visitors were outclassed in all areas by a strong
opposition who were menacing with ball in hand, recycled well at the
tackle area and were thorough in defence. The score line reflects the
mountain which the Cavaliers had to climb but did not reflect the team
effort which was sustained for periods in the second half. Heads did
not drop and the team should be proud of that. From every trouncing
comes positives and it is up to the Cavaliers to bounce back. Man of
the match went to Mark Piercy who manfully stepped up to the task
putting the opposition number 11 on the floor on a number of occasions.
