Clitheroe played host to Bury at the weekend in what saw two struggling teams lock horns.
Clitheroe set the tone early on with their forwards dominating the breakdowns, scrums and lineouts from the off set. Great pressure applied from the forwards saw Dan Jones bundle himself over the line after only 10 minutes of play for Clitheroes 1st of the day and his 1st of the season. Bury responded around 10 minutes later with a try of their own, narrowing missing the conversion.
The return of Richard Few at 9 was welcomed as was the presence of Luke McMahon at 10, both quickly working out a dream partnership that ran riot through the Bury defence. Matt Furbush also enjoying himself in the centres alongside Richard Thornber.
In also a mirror of the 1st try Chris Birchall (pictured) found himself over the line for Clitheroes 2nd try after yet again some stellar hard work delivered form the front 8 with Spence, Taylor,Farnsworth and Thornber all HEAVILY involved. Matt F converting the try. Danny Cowgill put in a fantastic shift making tackles left, right and centre.
Clitheroe conceded a weak penalty just before the 1st half ended, which Bury converted. HT score 14-8.
The second half was again a good performance from Clitheroe who spent most of the half camped under Bury attack, yet rose valiantly to the challenge with everyone doing their best to see off the attack. The referee may have seen things that Clitheroe didn't in the 2nd half as he awarded uncountable penalties against Clitheore. None of which developed.
The icing on the cake saw Matt F receive a ball from Luke McMahon and subsequently carve his way through the defence and score under the posts, he then converted his own try. Gary Fernandez offering support if needed for the try, also having a good game.
Clitheroe win their 1st game of the season and hopefully will keep this momentum going.
Final score 21-8 to the maroons, COYM!
