With no league game last week Clitheroes 2nd team were eager to get back on the field and back to winning ways as they hosted Bolton as their opposition under almost near perfect conditions in which to play rugby.
Bolton turned up light of a few players but veterans Andrew Thornber and Steve Dowson donned Boltons colours and also Dan Jones stepped up to ensure a fair game.
The maroons got off to a fantastic start with some great work from the forwards in the scrum allowing the backs to stretch their legs and the ever impressive Will Spencley-Jones [pic] found himself scoring his first try of the day. Stuart Railton converting and Clitheroe lead 7-0.
In what would be a reoccurring theme throughout the game Clitheroe dominated the scrum and the majority of the line outs allowing the backs to show off their skills. Stuart Railton, WSJ x 2 and Josh Kay all managing to increase Clitheroes lead going into the interval with Railton converting two of the tries. Clitheroe lead 31-0.
From the restart Clitheroe found themselves on the back foot and under a little pressure and Bolton capitalised on this and manages to get themselves over the line with some quick passing. Unfortunately missing the conversion. Clitheroe still lead 31-5 into half-time.
Unfortunately Cameron Braithwaite sustained an injury meaning he wouldn't be able to play the second half allowing Sam Thornber to step off the bench.
Starting the second half as they started the first Clitheroe applied masses of pressure and dominated the set pieces yet again. The aggression paid off and WSJ got himself another try. Sam Thornber managed to get two tries both of which started from Clitheroes own half and with some nifty footwork and perhaps some lazy defending he found himself increasing the lead. Stuart Railton also managing another try and converting two of them meant Clitheroe extended the lead to 55-5.
Bolton however where not finished and managed to score two tries in the second half but not converting either. Clitheroe still lead 55-15.
In the dying embers of the game after countless attempts Miles Sharples finally managed to get himself a try and Stuart Railton converted perfectly to wrap up what was an entertaining game for the Littlemoor faithfull.
A great shift from some of the improrving 2nd XV players, John Norman begining to show some of his early season promose returning with some rampaging runs, along side Jamie Taylor who is beginning to get to grips with the nuances of front row play. Nice to see Jerry Sturgess, returning to the maroon and gold colours after a year away, having a sound game at scrum half
