For the purposes of the Junior Challenge competition, Clitheroe U16s managed a 30-0 home win in their 3rd junior challenge fixture this year. The matches are stopped once the scores between the two teams playing differ by more than 40 points and on this occasion, that happened towards the end of the first half. For the remainder of the game, Clitheroe gave Burnley enough players to make a full side and the game continued as a development session.
Looking at the game in its entirety, Clitheroe managed to score 14 unanswered tries. Centre Duck continued his scoring with another 6 tries and a significant number of conversions. He had a belter of a game and setup the try of the game in the first half when he chipped through before regathering and passing athletically to his left in the same motion to a galloping Hamlet to score. I think the term used to describe this brilliant act of play was "ridiculous"!
Forwards and backs got on the scoresheet. Props running more than half the field to score happened a couple of times and hooker Spink scored the first try after sprinting 40+ yards down the touchline.
There'll be much harder tests for this great set of players as they progress through this season but what we know now is that they have no mean amount of skill, a great deal of endeavour and now, after plenty of false starts, a significant amount of confidence. Well done to them all and thanks to the fairly large crowd who came to sample this fine rugby fare on a chilly Sunday morning.
